Specialised Department Control of Animal Diseases/Disposal of Animal By-Products

The specialised department Control of Animal Diseases/Disposal of Animal By-Products consists of 8 employees, male and female, in the branches Oldenburg, Hannover, Lüneburg and Braunschweig.

This department is occupied with the following animal diseases and their prevention:

• bovine herpes virus infection (BHV1), bovine virus diarrhoea (BVD), paratuberculosis
• tuberculosis, leucosis, brucellosis, Aujeszky virus (AK)
• salmonellosis
• rabies
• infectious soliped anaemia
• bee diseases

Particular emphasis is put on:

• controlling events involving livestock, in and beyond the region (exhibitions, markets, riding competitions, stud book registration)
• granting permission to laboratories to work on animal disease viruses
• EC-approval of fertilisation and embryo transfer stations, keeping monkeys and fish
• Approving and monitoring processing companies in usage and disposal of animal by-products not suitable for human consumption (materials of high and medium risk factors: Categories 1 and 2)

Apart from these duties, the municipal veterinary authorities are advisedon issues relating to the mentioned diseases, on questions of internal collaborative trade, on issues relating to import and export of animals and products derived from animals, and the disposal of animal by-products. Additionally, training in the usage of the central animal databank HI-Tier and TRACES-databank for cross-border trade is carried out.

Members of the department work together with the LAVES animal disease coordination centre in cases of crises.
