The Food and Veterinary Institute Braunschweig/Hannover, Institute Braunschweig currently employs 140 members of staff and as a part of the official Food Inspection Service, is responsible state-wide for the examination and evaluation of:

  • grain, cereal products, bread, bakery products and pasta
  • eggs, mayonnaise, cooking fat and oil
  • honey and sweet spreads
  • ready-to-serve meals, soups and sauces,
  • nutritional supplements and balanced diets, weight-reducing diets, nutriments for sportsmen, additives
  • products made from fruits, vegetables, potatoes and mushrooms, fresh mushrooms, nuts, spices, seasoning and flavouring
  • fruit juices and concentrate-based fruit drinks, non-alcoholic beverages, beer and mineral water
  • wine, wine products, wine-like beverages as well as spirits
  • food products manufactured via genetically modified processes.


Further state-wide responsibilities include:

  • protein differentiation including evidence of potential allergens
  • flavouring analytics
  • carrying out wine controls
  • biological test systems in the field of effect directed analysis
  • statements on nutritional medicine
  • testing for mycotoxins
  • testing for particles of genetically modified organisms in feed and seeds
  • monitoring environmental radioactivity in honey, wild mushrooms, drinking water, and herbal biological indicator organisms as well as carrying out special testing methods.

Additionally carried out:

  • regional control of environmental radioactivity in foodstuffs
  • testing for contaminants
  • physico-chemical and microbiological testing and evaluation of ice-cream as well as investigating company control samples of large ice-cream manusfacturers from the region of East Lower Saxony
  • microbiological testing and evaluation of food samples from food inspection authorities in nearby administrative districts taken in cases of illness, as well as all foodstuffs for which the Food Institute Braunschweig is responsible for statewide.

Inspection of company operations are also carried out with the approval of the responsible monitoring authorities.

Furthermore, the Food and Veterinary Institute Braunschweig/Hannover, Institute Braunschweig is involved in the training of veterinary medical students and food inspectors. State examined food chemists complete their studies after successfully passing the second state exam after a one-year apprenticeship.

In the Food and Veterinary Institute Braunschweig/Hannover, in Hannover a team of 60 employees work in the diagnostics and combat of epidemics and other infectious animal diseases, in animal protection as well as in direct consumer health protection.

In the field of diagnostics of infectious diseases, besides routine tasks there is a focus on diagnostics of wildlife diseases and proof of infectious diseases of fresh water fish. Additionally, in terms of consumer protection emphasis is laid on control of zoonotic agents such as salmonella, chlamzdia, rabies virus or BSE. Zoonoses are infectious diseases which are transmitted from animals to humans.

A further focus is on investigations into food safety. At the Food and Veterinary Institute Braunschweig/Hannover, in Hannover within the scope of comprehensive control tests food processing and manufacturing industries and their products are tested for hygienic status. Food-producing animals and their products are controlled additionally for residues (pharmaceutical, forbidden or unauthorised substances). Further investigations are used to determine radioactive contamination of animal and plant food as well as bioindicators with radionuclides..
Further programmes are run regularly in addition to the introduced tasks above through which, for example, information on the spreading of special pathogens is gained.

The Food and Veterinary Institute Braunschweig/Hannover in Hannover operates a quality system according to standard EN ISO/IEC 17025.
