Institute for Feed Safety Stade

The Institute for Feed Safety Stade is responsible for the official testing of fodder for livestock and pets. The samples are submitted mostly by the examiners of the feed monitoringdepartment, which is also part of LAVES.

The Institute for Feed Safety Stade investigates approximately 3000 samples annually, with around 20000 orders, testing for about 60000 parameters. These investigation parameters mainly include:

  • chlorinated hydrocarbon (CKW)
  • polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)
  • mycotoxin
  • pharmacological effective substances and additives (declaration as well as residue control)
  • elements (including minerals, trace elements, heavy metal)
  • antioxidants
  • quality-improving components of food (fat, crude protein, crude fibres, sugar and ash)
  • vitamins
  • amino acids
  • microbiological compositions, evidence of zoonotic agents, (e.g. salmonella), evidence of probiotics
  • microscopic tests (ergot, animal components, biological purity and composite)

Further testing fields are located at other LAVES institutes, e.g. the testing for dioxin and pesticide residue at the Food and Veterinary Institute Oldenburg and genetically-modified organisms at the Food Institute Braunschweig.

The Institute for Feed Safety Stade employs 51 workers, including technical assistants, lab workers and assistants, as well as 15 academically trained staff. Moreover, the Institute trains two chemical laboratory assistants.
