Veterinary Institute Hannover

In the Veterinary Institute Hannover a team of 60 employees is engaged in the diagnostic of notifiable and other infectious animal diseases, issuing expert opinions in cases of infringement of animal welfare, testing of samples for hygiene control in food processing companies and detection of residues of pharmaceuticals in animals.

In the field of diagnostic of infectious diseases besides routine tasks a focus is on diagnostic of wild life diseases and diseases of fresh water fish. Regarding consumer protection emphasis is laid on control of zoonotic agents as Salmonella, Coxiella, rabies virus or mad cow disease. Zoonoses are called diseases that are transmitted from animals to humans.

Microbiological testing for verification of self control systems of companies producing milk and egg products is another focal point.
Control of residues of animal pharmaceuticals in life animals for slaughter and animal products is another field of activity.
Further monitoring programs are run for the surveillance of radiation burden in special farm products. At that we work on several projects that give information on the prevalence or spreading of special pathogens in animal populations.

The Veterinary Institute runs a quality system according to standard ISO 17025 and has accreditation since 1998.
