Specialised department Control of Animal Diseases and Veterinary Task Force

The Specialised department Control of Animal Diseases and Veterinary Task Force in LAVES has a staff of 29 male and female employees. They are based in Oldenburg (eracidating animal epidemics and pests), Hannover (Control of Animal Diseases, fish epizootics control) and Stade (pest control).

Focus of the of the department's work lies in following areas:

  • advising to the municipal veterinary authorities on disease law issues relating to animal diseases in categories A to E of Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/1882
  • supporting the Lower Saxony veterinary authorities in combating animal diseases (including bees and fish)
  • participating in working groups organising animal epidemic eradication concepts
  • working together with the taskforces in other federal states and with veterinarians of other EU countries involved in eradicating animal epidemics
  • further developing and compiling of manuals dealing with the eradication of animal epidemics, with the involvement of the Lower Saxony Veterinary Authorities and the working group from North Rhine Westphalia, and training of the municipal Veterinary Authorities in usage and implementation of the manual for animal epidemic eradication
  • publishing information from consumers, affected commercial associations, authorities etc. available on the internet site: www.tierseucheninfo.niedersachsen.de
  • holding further educational seminars and practical workshops
  • offering an advisory service regarding pests in areas such as fodder, food and hygiene
  • advice on questions of intra-Community trade and the import and export of animals and products of animal origin
  • advice on questions regarding the disposal of animal by-products
  • training in the usasge of the central animal database HI-Tier (HI = origin and information system for animals)
  • training and advice TRACES database for cross-border trade (TRACES = Trade Control and Expert System)
  • regulation of supra-regional events involving livestock (exhibitions, markets, riding tournaments, licensing)
  • granting permission to laboratories to work on animal disease viruses
  • EG-approval of fertilisation and embryo transfer stations, keeping monkeys and fish
  • approving and monitoring processing companies in usage and disposal of animal by-products not suitable for human consumption (materials of high and medium risk factors: Categories 1 and 2)

Members of the department work together with the LAVES animal disease coordination centre in cases of crises.
